The trail on this trip will give you an opportunity to witness a 12th Century cave monastery in Shargole, valleys of herbal plants and flowers in full bloom and a hidden glacial lake in Sapi. spectacular panorama of the Karakoram Range and Nun Kun Massif atop Rusi La. Along the whole trail look out for mountain wildlife such as Marmots, Fox and if lucky Himalayan Ibex or Brown Bear.

Day-wise Program

Day1: Arrive in Kargil from Leh/Srinagar. Overnight at hotel

Your trek leader with greet you at the hotel upon arrival. Take this day to acclimatize. 
In the evening, explore a local family run museum (www.kargilmuseum.org) followed by walk in the old caravan bazaar; a rare glimpse into Kargil’s Silk Route trade history. Visit Hundurman Broq, an abandoned village on the Indian side of Line of Control (LoC). As you are driving up through these winding roads, a village on the other side of the LoC is also visible across river Shingo as it flows into Pakistan. 

Day2: Dirve to Shergole. Short Day Hike to Urgen Rzong caves in Shargole (Total trek time: 5 to 6 hours)

Today after breakfast, drive to Shergole village. On the way we will take a quick stop over to check out the Shargole Monastery perched into a rock formation. The onward trek is 3 hour long. This is an interesting trek as you will be negotiating small water streams through narrow gorges and green pastures and finally ends up at an ancient Buddhist site, Urgyen Dong Caves. These caves are considered as the meditation retreat of Guru Padmashambhava, who was responsible for spreading Buddhism in Ladakh. Apart from being a fun and exciting trek, it is an ideal trail to for acclimatization.
Carry a day pack. Light packed lunch will be provided. We will back to base by evening. Spend the night at the camp.

Day3: Drive to Changyul from Shargole via Sapi La by Vehicle

Drive to the Changyul, the first village before the hard part of the trek begins and the last village where the road ends. An hour of walk will bring you to the village. We will set up camp at a homestay tonight in a hamlet called Changyul in Sapi. You will be crossing 14000ft today so use the evening to get acclimatized and prepare for next days’ trek.

Day4: Changyul-Sapi Lake-Spanglung (Total Trek time: 6 hours approx)

Today we will begin early for our trek to the Sapi Lake. It’s a 3-4 hour gradual uphill Trek from Changyul to Sapi Lake and the decent is around 2 to 3 hours. Enjoy packed lunch by the lake at the snout of the glacier. The trail is filled with wild flowers of different colours.  We will return to the next hamlet called Spanglung and setup stay at a local homestay.

Day5: Spanglung-Rusila-Ldumburtse (Total Trek time: 5 to 6 hours)

Todays’ trek is challenging as we are going to slowly start ascending towards Rusi La pass. It’s an uphill trek (45o gradient) upto Rusila at 16360ft but views are to die for. Atop Rusi La enjoy super panoramic views of the snow capped, high mountains all around. Towards the east as far as the eyes can see are the Karakorm Peaks, to the North are the Peaks of Balistan and to the West the mountain of Nun and Kun, Pannicle and Bobang are visible with the source glaciers of Phulungma tributaries in the immediate background.  An easy descend down will bring us to a greener area of Ldumburtse at 14650ft where we will camp by the stream. Explore the surroundings over a hot cup of tea in the evening. 
Weather at this height changes very quickly and it is likely to rain or snow.

Day6: Ldumburtse-Chakdo La-Pangbar Brog-Bartu  (Total Trek Time: 7 to 8 hours)

This day again will start with a steep uphill trek to Snag La and then trek diagonally (to the stream) through a small valley called Khalogtse to the base of Chakdo La. Another steep climb and you will reach Chakdo La at 14396ft. From Chakdo La you will see the village of Pangbor Broq down the valley.

the last stretch of this part of the trip as you will be entering Suru Valley. A 2 to 3 hour easy down trek through the streets of Pangbor and further down will take you to the village of Bartu. We will start very early so that we are in Bartu by 9am. After a quick stopover and snack, from here you will take a jeep ride for your journey towards the historical village of Kartse Khar village. The 15 km road stretch is partly metal and partly rough with few gradual slopes and descends. Suru valley in July and August offers lush green landscapes. Enroute stopover to check out a 16th century mosque in Stiankung village. After a couple of Kilometers you will reach Kartse Khar village by late afternoon. Explore the ancient village along with the local guide to see the ancient Buddha rock statue, 12th century castle ruins and the tomb of the legendry Queen of Ladakh – Rgyal Khatoon. Ask our local guide for more insights.    
Head back to Kargil and check into hotel.

Day7: Check out of hotel

If you wish to book transport for yourself for your onward journey to Leh/Srinagar, please let us know in advance so that we can make timely arrangements.

Booking & Cancelation

Booking a trip with us – How it works?

For scheduled trips, you can directly send a booking enquiry by clicking on Book Now next to each event. Send in your basic details asked for in the booking form. We will get back to you with the detailed itinerary, trip essentials and payment details.

Booking a trip with us is a two step process.

Step 1:
Pay 10% in advance and secure your seat. You are required to send us a confirmation email with the copy of the bank payment slip to journeys@rootsladakh.in

Step 2:
In order for us to secure your booking, pay the remaining 90% prior to the date of departure. Upon payment, you are required to send us the following details by email to journeys@rootsladakh.in:

- Scanned copy of the Medical fitness certificate attested by a certified medical practitioner
- Scanned copy of Payment slip from the bank for payment of 90% of the booking amount.
- Please specify if you need a mule/porter so that we can arrange for one in advance. You can make the payment once you are here
- Specify if you want a single room for yourself. Cost will be communicated to you upon request

Upon receiving these details, we will confirm your booking and the receipt of our payment by email. You can correspond with us over the same email id for any further queries. We are happy to help!

NOTE:
- Booking is secured temporarily upon payment of 10% of the amount
- Bookings will be confirmed after the 90% payment is received prior to date of departure.
- For bookings made within less than 15 days of the date of departure, the full amount must be paid in advance.

Cancellation – How it works?

For scheduled trips, we reserve the right to cancel any trip because of inadequate enrolment that makes the trip economically infeasible to operate or because of our concerns with respect to the safety, health, or welfare of the participants.
If the trip is cancelled due to inadequate enrolment, you will be intimated at least a week in advance. We will cancel the trip if the group size is less than six, one week before the start of the journey.

In case of voluntary cancellation, send us a notice by email to journeys@rootsladakh.in with the subject line “Requesting cancellation --”

- 30% of the total amount will be retained as cancellation fee if the trip is canceled 30-21 days prior to date of   journey.
- 50% of the total amount will be retained as cancellation fee if the trip is canceled 21-15 days prior to date of journey. 
- 70% of the total amount will be retained as cancellation fee if the trip is canceled 15-07 days prior to date of   journey.
- No refund will be granted on cancellation done within one week of the date of journey.
- No refund will be granted for portion/portions of the journey not performed by the traveler.
- No refund will be granted in case of non-performance of journey due to external and natural events.
- The refund process will take atleast 10 to 15 days working days.
- In the event of any dispute, the matter shall be resolved under the jurisdiction of the District Court, Kargil.

Terms specific to scheduled trips:

- If the remainder 90% is not received 15 days prior to the date of departure, the booking will be considered as cancelled and will be made open for other interested participants. The 10% advance will be retained as cancellation fee
- Full refund will be made for trips cancelled by us due to inadequate enrollment
