Warwan Trek is one of the eight ancient Transhimalayan traverses that transcend from Ladakh Himalayas (Suru valley) to Kashmir Himalayas. Known as the salt route, for centuries Trans Himalayan traders from Kashmir and Ladakh have passed through here.

Day-wise Program

Day1: Arrive in Leh & Leave for Kargil

- Pick up from Airport and drive to Kargil (5 hours)
- Lunch Enroute
- Evening for leisure

Day2: Visit to Hundurman border village and Kargil War Memorial Drass

- After an early breakfast, we will drive to Hundurman which is border settlement on the LoC between India and Pakistan and check out the Hundurman Museum
- Post Hundurman, we will drive to Drass at the Kargil War Memorial
- Return to guest house by evening

Day3: Drive from Kargil to Panikhar basecamp. Trek  fom Panikhar to Sumdo/Deonora

- This is the first day of your trek. 
- Drive from Kargil to basecamp in Panikhar
- Start  trek at 7 am from Panikher, after a healthy early breakfast.
- You will cover a total of 15.6 km with an altitude gain of 1,550 ft. The trail follows Panikher nala upstream and will take you around 6 hours as it gains altitude gradually.
- Our first drinking water source comes 2 and half hours into the trail.
- You will climb gradually to a meadow that will then lead to a wide river basin, that is a confluence of two rivers, called Sumdo.
- Denora is a bit ahead of Sumdo.
- Overnight will be spent in tents at Denora.

Day4: Denora to Kalapari

- After an early breakfast, take of your shoes for crossing multiple icy streams.
- You will cover 3 km in 1 and a half hours.
- You can consider this as an acclimatization/rest day for the pass climb the next day.
- Your breath will be taken away by the bright pink flowers that you will see on the slope on your left.
- You will be inspired by the wide panorama of the Sumdo and Denora basin.
- Overnight will be spent in tents at the Kalapari meadows

Day5: Kalapari to Kaintal via Lonvilad Gully

- This is going to be the most challenging day of the Warwan Valley trek. It is imperative to start early.
- You will cover 11km in 11-13 hours. You will gain 1,600 ft. and lost 2950 ft. by the time you reach the campsite.
- This day will be marked by heart stopping views of a glacial lake, The Kalapari Peak and a view of a wide glacier tumbling down the flanks of a mountain into a greyish crevasse. 
- Overnight will be spent in tents at the Kaintal meadows.

Day6: Kaintal to Humpet

- Today you will cover 19 km in 6-8 hours and you will lose 600ft. in altitude.
- On the trail you will cross several streams before you hit a wide river basin that leads to lush, green meadows. We will take a short lunch break here by rocks that are chiseled like square.
- The view from Humpet of the fresh grasslands, the wide Kaintal river and the Bhakarval settlements on the opposite side of the bank will dazzle your eyes.
- Overnight will be spent in tents at Humpet.

Day7: Humpet to Sukhnai

- Today’s trek will be a 19 km long descent with an altitude loss of 1,700 ft.
- You will descend quickly from two valleys to the meticulous grasslands of Sukhnai.
- On the other of the valley you’ll see the trail that leads to Sheshnag and Amarnath. This is the junction at which and the Warwan Valley and Kashmir begin.
- We’ll take a break at a grassy clearing near the mound of Sukhnai for lunch.
- Sukhnai is startlingly beautiful.The closely packed village will remind you of the gaul Village in Asterix and Obelix.
- Overnight will be spent in tents at Sukhnai.

Day8: Sukhnai to Chaudraiman

- This day will be long. It’s the last leg of the Great Warwan trek. You will cover 16 km with an altitude loss of 900 ft as you make your way towards Chaudraiman.
- The picturesque trail beyond sukhnai will lead you to different villages very 5-6 km.  The Marwah River slices the valley in half, as it meanders its way to the Chenab River.
- The heart of the Warwan Valley is lined with vast unbroken green pastures.
- A medical dispensary and a few government houses signal the start of Chaudraiman.
- Overnight will be spent in tents or a home stay in Chadraiman.
- Chaudraiman is connected by road to Ishan, Anantnag, Larnoo and Srinagar.

Day9: Depart for Srinagar

- Departure for Srinagar.
- Check into hotel in Srinagar by evening
- You can celebrate the completion of the Great Warwan trek. The experience will teach you that you are capable of much more than you can ever imagine. And the images that are captured in your mind, shall stay with you for a long time to come. Congratulations!

- Transport:Leh Airport pickup. Transfers from trek points and campsites to hotel in Kargil, Leh-Kargil-Leh or Sgr-Kargil-Sgr. Sgr aiport drop.

By signing up for a trip with Roots, you acknowledge that you have voluntarily applied to participate in this trip and that you have read the description of the trip as it appears on the website and the information below:

- You are expected to carry your own luggage. If you need a porter/mule during treks please inform us in advance.
- Delays are expected on account of roadblock & weather conditions. Our effort will be to continue with the trip as per the schedule & make you as comfortable as possible. But in such situations we may have to compromise on the campsite & adjust to these situations then & there. The final call will be taken by our Lead Guide on location.
- The itinerary should be viewed as ideal & we may have to make some spot changes due various unavoidable reasons. 
- The distances & altitude mentioned in the above itinerary are to the best of our knowledge & information; marginal variance in the actual distances & altitudes is possible.
- You are expected to be in reasonable shape and fitness, being able to walk for several hours at a normal pace as well as to take care of your own equipment.
- You are required to produce a Medical Fitness certificate before starting the trip.
- The minimum age restriction for this trip is 18
- All outdoor related activities involve a certain level of risk. You are expected to sign an Indemnity Form in agreement to the risks involved through part taking in such outdoor activities.
- Roots Ladakh  reserves the right and permission to use photographs of individuals and photographs submitted by them on tour for use in promotional and publicity purposes

Trip Essentials

What to carry?
- Valid ID proof (Passport/Voter ID/Drivers Licence) 
- No suitcases. Opt for 70 to 90 litre backpacks
- Water-proof trekking shoes
- One down jacket or warmer for chilly nights
- Rain poncho or jacket/windcheater (a must!)
- Thermal inner (not advisable to wear it while trekking)
- Trekking pants (one spare)
- Sun block
- Hat
- Sun goggles
- Trekking pole
- Spare under garments and socks (three pairs max)
- Flashlight with extra batteries (preferably wearable)
- Water bottle, preferably wide mouthed, with at least one litre capacity
- Personal toiletries
- Power bank (if you want to use phone camera)

Booking & Cancelation

Booking a trip with us – How it works?

For scheduled trips, you can directly send a booking enquiry by clicking on Book Now next to each event. Send in your basic details asked for in the booking form. We will get back to you with the detailed itinerary, trip essentials and payment details.

Booking a trip with us is a two step process.

Step 1:
Pay 10% in advance and secure your seat. You are required to send us a confirmation email with the copy of the bank payment slip to

Step 2:
In order for us to secure your booking, pay the remaining 90% prior to the date of departure. Upon payment, you are required to send us the following details by email to

- Scanned copy of the Medical fitness certificate attested by a certified medical practitioner
- Scanned copy of Payment slip from the bank for payment of 90% of the booking amount.
- Please specify if you need a mule/porter so that we can arrange for one in advance. You can make the payment once you are here
- Specify if you want a single room for yourself. Cost will be communicated to you upon request

Upon receiving these details, we will confirm your booking and the receipt of our payment by email. You can correspond with us over the same email id for any further queries. We are happy to help!

- Booking is secured temporarily upon payment of 10% of the amount
- Bookings will be confirmed after the 90% payment is received prior to date of departure.
- For bookings made within less than 15 days of the date of departure, the full amount must be paid in advance.

Cancellation – How it works?

For scheduled trips, we reserve the right to cancel any trip because of inadequate enrolment that makes the trip economically infeasible to operate or because of our concerns with respect to the safety, health, or welfare of the participants.
If the trip is cancelled due to inadequate enrolment, you will be intimated at least a week in advance. We will cancel the trip if the group size is less than six, one week before the start of the journey.

In case of voluntary cancellation, send us a notice by email to with the subject line “Requesting cancellation --”

- 30% of the total amount will be retained as cancellation fee if the trip is canceled 30-21 days prior to date of   journey.
- 50% of the total amount will be retained as cancellation fee if the trip is canceled 21-15 days prior to date of journey. 
- 70% of the total amount will be retained as cancellation fee if the trip is canceled 15-07 days prior to date of   journey.
- No refund will be granted on cancellation done within one week of the date of journey.
- No refund will be granted for portion/portions of the journey not performed by the traveler.
- No refund will be granted in case of non-performance of journey due to external and natural events.
- The refund process will take atleast 10 to 15 days working days.
- In the event of any dispute, the matter shall be resolved under the jurisdiction of the District Court, Kargil.

Terms specific to scheduled trips:

- If the remainder 90% is not received 15 days prior to the date of departure, the booking will be considered as cancelled and will be made open for other interested participants. The 10% advance will be retained as cancellation fee
- Full refund will be made for trips cancelled by us due to inadequate enrollment

Services included in the cost is subject to the individual trip. You can refer to the trip itinerary details to see what services are included in the cost. Following are the services that are usually excluded from the cost, unless specified in the particular itinerary:
