The term “chadar” meaning “blanket” is representative of the ice cover that forms over the river in the dead of winter. You will realize, on the trek, that it cannot be better described. The Chadar Trek is a route connecting villages along the frozen Zanskar River during the winter. The route has been used for centuries for trade and transportation, and is the most reliable in February when the ice is most stable.

Day-wise Program


Arrive Leh (11,400 ft.)

- Arrival at Leh.
- Meet us at Leh and check in to the hotel. The first day is kept for relaxation and recuperation.
- The night will be spent at the hotel.

Day2: Acclimatization Day

- Early morning briefing session, equipment check 
- Spend this day acclimatizing to the high altitude of Leh
- Spend your time at leisure exploring Leh market, Leh palace and Central Asian Museum
- Overnight at hotel

Day3: Medical Fitness Checkup + Last minute shopping

- After breakfast, visit to the local SNM hospital for a medical fitness check up. (It has been made mandatory by the local administration for every trekker going on Chadar trek without which one will not be allowed to join the trek)
- Second half of the day can be spent doing some last minute shopping/exploring Leh town or resting.
- Overnight at the hotel

Day4: Leh (11,400) – Shingra Yokma (10,400 ft.) via Chilling. Trek from Singra Yogma (10,400 ft.) – Gyalpo (10,550 ft.)

- Early morning we will drive to Shingra Yokma via chilling.
- It is a 65 km long drive. (2 to 3 hours)
- This is the start of the Chadar trek.
- Gyalpo is a 10 kilometer trek away from Tilad Do along the Zanskar River.
- Spend the night in tents

Day5: Gyalpo (10,550 ft.) – Tibb Cave (10,800 ft.)

- After an early breakfast, gear up for a long day.
- The trek to Tibb Cave is 15 km long.
- You will see many frozen waterfalls, one higher than the other.
- Spend the night in tents at Tibb.

Day6: Tibb Cave (10,800 ft.) – Nyerak (11,120 ft.)

- Gear up for a 12 and half kilometer trek to Nyerak Village.
- The long march along the river is as hard as it is fulfilling.
- Tents will be set up by the river for the night.

Day7: Nyerak (11,120 ft.) – Tibb Cave (10,800 ft.)

- Get up early and enjoy the view as breakfast is prepared.
- We will trek back to Tibb Cave (12 km)
- Get there by early evening to set up camp.
- Spend the night in tents by the river.

Day8: Tibb Cave (10,800 ft.) – Gyalpo (10,550 ft.)

- Post breakfast, we’ll continue trekking back from the same route that we came from.
- You would be a bit low on energy after trekking for 5 days so we will take it easy.
- Once we reach Gyalpo, we’ll set up camp by a warm fire and get warm.
- Spend the night in tents by the river.

Day9: Gyalpo (10,550 ft.) – Tilad Do (10,400 ft.) via Shingra Koma – Leh

- This will be the final day of the magical Chadar Trek.
- We will trek back to the starting point, Tilad Do via Shingra Koma.
- We will reach there, early in the evening if all goes as planned.
- A jeep will take us back to Leh, where you can sleep like a baby after this long, long journey.
- Spend the night at a hotel in Leh.

Day10: Departure From Leh

- Departure from Leh.

- Accommodation: Guest house in Leh on twin sharing basis (no meals)
- Transport: transfers from trek points to hotel in Leh
- Meals: No Meals in the hotel. While on the trip all meal & snacks will be provided. Veg meals will be freshly prepared on camps. 
- Professional trekking guide, helpers and kitchen staff would accompany the group.
- Equipment: sleeping bags, tents, mattresses, safety gear, oxygen cylinders, first aid, ropes etc

- Porters to carry personal equipment (can be arranged at an additional cost of Rs 600/per day)

Fine Print & Trip Specific Important Information:

By signing up for a trip with Roots, you acknowledge that you have voluntarily applied to participate in this trip and that you have read the description of the trip as it appears on the website and the information below:

- Delays are expected on account of roadblock & weather conditions. Our effort will be to continue with the trip as per the schedule & make you as comfortable as possible. But in such    situations we may have to compromise on the campsite & adjust to these situations then & there. The final call will be taken by our Lead Guide on location.
- The itinerary should be viewed as ideal & we may have to make some spot changes due various unavoidable reasons. 
- Due to the harsh winters in Ladakh, electricity and water supply is limited. Therefore, in hotels heating facility will be limited and both hot and cold water will be provided in buckets    upon request.
- It is advisable to understand the implications of High Altitude on your body. It is advised to read up on AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) to better equip yourself before the trek.
- You are susceptible to minor injuries on the trek such as sprains and bruises. Major injuries are very rare. However, our guides are trained in first response incase of any mishap. The  nearest medical facility is in Chilling at the beginning of the trek.
- There is no mobile connectivity during the trek and the only mode of communication is through walkies or runners.
- The minimum temperature on the trek can go down to -20 degrees. 
- The distances & altitude mentioned in the above itinerary are to the best of our knowledge & information; marginal variance in the actual distances & altitudes is possible.
- You are expected to be in reasonable shape and fitness, being able to walk for several hours at a normal pace as well as to take care of your own equipment.
- You are required to produce a Medical Fitness certificate before starting the trip.
- The minimum age restriction for this trip is 18
- All outdoor related activities involve a certain level of risk. You are expected to sign an Indemnity Form in agreement to the risks involved through part taking in such outdoor activities.
- Roots Ladakh  reserves the right and permission to use photographs of individuals and photographs submitted by them on tour for use in promotional and publicity purposes

Trip Essentials

What to carry? 

- Valid ID proof (Passport/Voter ID/Drivers Licence) 
- 70 to 90 litre backpacks
- Water-proof trekking shoes/Rubber gum boots
- One down jacket or warmer for chilly nights
- Rain poncho or jacket/windcheater (a must!)
- Thermal inner (not advisable to wear it while trekking)
- Trekking pants (one spare)
- Sun block
- Hat
- Sun goggles
- Trekking pole
- Spare under garments and socks (three pairs max)
- Flashlight with extra batteries (preferably wearable)
- Water bottle, preferably wide mouthed, with at least one litre capacity
- Personal toiletries
- Power bank 

Booking & Cancelation

Booking a trip with us – How it works?

For scheduled trips, you can directly send a booking enquiry by clicking on Book Now next to each event. Send in your basic details asked for in the booking form. We will get back to you with the detailed itinerary, trip essentials and payment details.

Booking a trip with us is a two step process.

Step 1:
Pay 10% in advance and secure your seat. You are required to send us a confirmation email with the copy of the bank payment slip to

Step 2:
In order for us to secure your booking, pay the remaining 90% prior to the date of departure. Upon payment, you are required to send us the following details by email to

- Scanned copy of the Medical fitness certificate attested by a certified medical practitioner
- Scanned copy of Payment slip from the bank for payment of 90% of the booking amount.
- Please specify if you need a mule/porter so that we can arrange for one in advance. You can make the payment once you are here
- Specify if you want a single room for yourself. Cost will be communicated to you upon request

Upon receiving these details, we will confirm your booking and the receipt of our payment by email. You can correspond with us over the same email id for any further queries. We are happy to help!

- Booking is secured temporarily upon payment of 10% of the amount
- Bookings will be confirmed after the 90% payment is received prior to date of departure.
- For bookings made within less than 15 days of the date of departure, the full amount must be paid in advance.

Cancellation – How it works?

For scheduled trips, we reserve the right to cancel any trip because of inadequate enrolment that makes the trip economically infeasible to operate or because of our concerns with respect to the safety, health, or welfare of the participants.
If the trip is cancelled due to inadequate enrolment, you will be intimated at least a week in advance. We will cancel the trip if the group size is less than six, one week before the start of the journey.

In case of voluntary cancellation, send us a notice by email to with the subject line “Requesting cancellation --”

- 30% of the total amount will be retained as cancellation fee if the trip is canceled 30-21 days prior to date of   journey.
- 50% of the total amount will be retained as cancellation fee if the trip is canceled 21-15 days prior to date of journey. 
- 70% of the total amount will be retained as cancellation fee if the trip is canceled 15-07 days prior to date of   journey.
- No refund will be granted on cancellation done within one week of the date of journey.
- No refund will be granted for portion/portions of the journey not performed by the traveler.
- No refund will be granted in case of non-performance of journey due to external and natural events.
- The refund process will take atleast 10 to 15 days working days.
- In the event of any dispute, the matter shall be resolved under the jurisdiction of the District Court, Kargil.

Terms specific to scheduled trips:

- If the remainder 90% is not received 15 days prior to the date of departure, the booking will be considered as cancelled and will be made open for other interested participants. The 10% advance will be retained as cancellation fee
- Full refund will be made for trips cancelled by us due to inadequate enrollment

Services included in the cost is subject to the individual trip. You can refer to the trip itinerary details to see what services are included in the cost. Following are the services that are usually excluded from the cost, unless specified in the particular itinerary:

- Accommodation in Srinagar/Leh
- Taxi from Leh/Srinagar to Kargil
